Why do AI-generated captions drift out of sync?

The timestamps are a little off, and every cut adds the error to the next one.

The short answer

Because the transcript's timestamps are approximate and the edit compounds them. Published Claude workflows measure word boundaries "approximately 120ms off", one transcription model drifting 50 to 100 ms, another ending words 100 to 300 ms early, and a caption that "ended exactly 4 to 5 seconds after it started". Across a 60-cut edit the error stacks until the second half is out of sync. RealTake transcribes word by word, times each word to the frame, and lets you edit any word in the Studio.

What the write-ups measured

  • Word boundaries "can sit approximately 120ms off", about four frames, compounding across a 60-cut edit. (Clixie)
  • Whisper "folds preceding silence into the first word"; Scribe "timestamps drift 50–100 ms"; an auto-editor caption "ended exactly 4–5 seconds after it started". (laozhang)
  • Word ends run "100 to 300 ms early", so cuts need forced alignment. (Sprites)
  • "Captions drifting out of sync in the second half" is listed as an expected failure. (Jordan Hongtai)

Why it compounds

A transcription model guesses where each word starts and ends. Guess 100 ms late on a word, cut the silence after it, and the next caption now starts 100 ms late too. Do that sixty times and the captions in the back half are a second behind the mouth. Burned-in captions cannot be nudged afterwards without re-rendering, so the usual fix is to watch the whole video, note the drift, and run it again.

How RealTake keeps captions on the word

RealTake's caption engine transcribes word by word and times each word against the frame, then decides which words carry each sentence and emphasises and animates them. 29 presets, 8 style families, 82 word animations. Every word and phrase is editable in the Studio before render, where the whole edit sits on one timeline with lanes for captions, titles, graphics, b-roll and sound, so a fix is a click, not a re-run. RealTake runs the same job as a product. Upload a raw video of yourself talking; the Director plans the whole edit, cuts the rambles with a reason on every cut, puts word-level captions on the frame, places b-roll and 200+ motion graphics clear of your face, adds sound, and renders in the cloud in minutes. Change anything in the Studio before it renders at no cost, then post or schedule it to LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Every feature is on every plan, you see the cost before anything renders, and a failed render is never charged.

FAQs

How far off are AI caption timestamps?
