HeyGen · question

Is HeyGen worth it for social media?

For a corporate explainer, maybe. For a feed where the person is the brand, its own users explain why not.

The short answer

For social media, where the person on screen is the brand, HeyGen's own users give three reasons it is not: the avatar reads as "slightly dead, slightly someone-else's", a small script edit costs the credits of a whole new video, and credits can vanish with support telling you to top up. Add Instagram's 2026 limits on undisclosed AI people. RealTake edits a real recording of you into a finished, posted video, with changes free before render.

What HeyGen users say

  • "Slightly dead, slightly someone-else's." A creator who built her own avatar and then watched it. (Substack)
  • "Re rendering after a small script edit costs you the same as a fresh video." (G2)
  • "Yesterday I had 900 credits, and they have all disappeared." And the reply: "When I contacted support, I was simply told to top up my credits." (Trustpilot)
  • "The avatar is far more expressive than the voice… timing is mismatched… flaws are too distracting for professional use." (Reddit user, quoted by VMEG)

HeyGen's pricing page, read October 28, 2026: Creator is $29 a month ($24 billed yearly) for 600 credits, Pro from $49 for 1,000. Credits are one currency, cost per video varies by model and length, and none survive a cancellation. (heygen.com/pricing)

Why the maths turns against you on social

A social feed wants volume and a real face. HeyGen's model charges per generated video and charges again for each change, so volume is exactly where the credits go fastest. And the thing social rewards, a person the audience recognises and trusts, is the thing an avatar approximates. The reviews above are all the same complaint from different angles: the output is almost you, and almost costs full price every time.

What RealTake does instead

RealTake edits your footage. It is you on screen. Record a raw video of yourself on your phone. RealTake cuts the rambles and retakes and keeps the best delivery of each line, adds animated captions, a title in the first second, b-roll, motion graphics, sound and camera moves, in a style built from the formats working on social this week. Fresh styles arrive every week. Every finished video comes with editor's notes: the edits made, time saved, a score for hook, content and pacing, and one thing to try next time.

Change a caption or trim a line in the Studio before it renders and it costs nothing. Then post or schedule it to LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from RealTake.

Every feature is on every plan. You see the cost of a video before it renders, changes in the Studio before render cost nothing, and a failed render is never charged.

Record one video of yourself and see it finished.
Free plan: 5 watermarked videos a month. No credit card.

FAQs

Is RealTake cheaper than HeyGen?
Per month, RealTake Presence is $49 against HeyGen Creator at $29. What the plan buys is different: HeyGen gives 600 credits that each generated video and each re-render spends; RealTake Presence includes around 16 to 32 finished videos a month with every feature, changes free before render and the cost shown first.
What is HeyGen good for, then?
HeyGen's own positioning is AI videos starring you, made in minutes, and it is widely used for scripted explainers. On a social feed, where the real person is the point, its users' own reviews are the argument against it.
Can I try RealTake without paying?
Yes. The free plan makes 5 watermarked videos a month with no credit card.
