What the popular video-editing MCPs and skills actually do
- video-use, 29.7k stars, MIT. Requires an ElevenLabs Scribe key for transcription, burns two-word uppercase captions, 33 open issues at the time of reading. (GitHub)
- ffmpeg-skill, 3.6k stars, 42 tools, runs as an MCP server. Its own README: "nothing in this repository detects faces, products, subjects." (GitHub)
- claude-shorts, 187 stars: faster-whisper, then face tracking, then Remotion captions. Needs an NVIDIA card or WSL2. (GitHub)
- ChatCut, a Claude Code and ChatGPT plugin on credit plans from $25 to $200 a month, with footage processed on their servers. (ChatCut pricing) Krater's agent editor starts at $20 a month; its own 15-second test "ran about 300 credits". (Krater)
- Blotato sells a $29 a month publishing MCP for after you edit elsewhere; its owner writes, "I built the Blotato MCP and I own the company that sells it." (Blotato)
Why a tool server is not an editor
An MCP gives the model verbs: trim, concat, burn captions, render. The hard part of editing is the nouns: which take is the keeper, where the hook is, which line deserves a zoom, where b-roll belongs and where it would cover a face. None of the servers above detect any of that, by their own description. The model fills the gap by guessing from frames, and users report it "does not contextualize the clips properly" (r/ClaudeAI). You end up as the director, feeding it instructions one render at a time.
What RealTake gives you instead of a tool server
RealTake runs the same job as a product. Upload a raw video of yourself talking; the Director plans the whole edit, cuts the rambles with a reason on every cut, puts word-level captions on the frame, places b-roll and 200+ motion graphics clear of your face, adds sound, and renders in the cloud in minutes. Change anything in the Studio before it renders at no cost, then post or schedule it to LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Every feature is on every plan, you see the cost before anything renders, and a failed render is never charged.
Upload one raw video and see the finished edit.
Free plan: 5 watermarked videos a month. No credit card.
Video-editing MCPs vs RealTake
| RealTake | Video-editing MCPs | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A finished video, planned and rendered | A set of FFmpeg commands the model can call |
| Who watches the footage | A Director: hook, pacing, keeper take, b-roll placement | Nobody; the servers state they detect no faces or subjects |
| Setup | None. Nothing to install | Keys, GPU or WSL2, a render stack, open issues |
| Captions | Word-level, 29 presets, every word editable, placed clear of your face | Burned in by script; two-word uppercase by default on the most popular tool |
| Price model | Plan with finished videos included; cost shown first | Free tooling plus model usage, or credits from $25 to $200 a month |
